14 DAY TRIAL // Windows Phone’s app problem deepens despite Microsoft’s push for universal apps, as more developers leave the platform to focus exclusively on Android and iOS.
After PayPal, CNN, and Amazon, another big name takes a big step towards abandoning Windows Phone. Rovio has just confirmed that Angry Birds will no longer be supported on devices running Microsoft’s operating system, as it wants to update its Android and iOS versions of the game exclusively.
In an email response offered recently, a member of the Rovio support team has explained that no other game of the company will be released on Windows Phone, and Android devices and iPhones will be the only ones getting new titles and updates.
“Rovio games are also no longer developed on Windows Phones. The only devices that are still supported and updated are Android and iOS devices. We are sorry for the inconvenience,” the statement submitted via email reads.
The PC client will be removed too
Furthermore, Rovio will also remove its PC client of Angry Birds, preferring instead to focus on the mobile versions of the game that are generating bigger revenues. Both Angry Birds and Bad Piggies will be pulled from PCs, and the focus will be on the mobile clients aimed at Android and iOS.
Rovio released its games in the Windows Store, including Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars, for Windows 8 users, and the company has no intention of making them fully compatible with Windows 10 or creating universal apps that would run on both PCs and smartphones.
Unfortunately, however, Windows Phone is losing more and more top developers, as many other companies have announced their departure from the platform in order to invest more in Android and iOS. Furthermore, there are big devs who don’t seem to be at all interested in bringing their games to Windows, including Niantic, the maker of the super popular Pokemon Go, which for the moment remains exclusive to non-Windows devices.
