"On Thursday of this week I noticed that it would no longer control my home automation setup (smart things). On Friday I noticed that it couldn't set a simple 2-minute timer any longer."

We usually recommend our readers to update their devices to the latest available security patches, but, in this case, you should hold back from updating your smartwatch running Android Wear 2.0, as Google is still struggling to fix bugs in the OS, such as the one that automatically marks recurring reminders as completed, which users reported since early June 2017.
Apparently, Google is aware of these issues, and they're working on fixing them, along with many others, but there's no telling when they'll be patched. Right now, you're better off if you don't update your Android Wear 2.0-powered smartwatch, and wait until Google releases a proper patch that addresses said bugs.
