14 DAY TRIAL // HMD Global brought back to life the famous Nokia 3310 earlier this year, and now it looks like the company wants to continue improving the series with more modern features.
After launching the device with 3G support in September, HMD is working on adding 4G capabilities to the Nokia 3310, along with what could be features that could push the dumb phone into the world of smartphones.
A listing on TENNA has been spotted recently with some indications as to what we can expect from the new Nokia 3310, and surprisingly, a more advanced operating system appears to be among the highlights.
Getting a taste of Android
Basically, the new Nokia 3310 that launched this year run on a Feature OS developed by HMD itself, but based on the famous Series 30+ platform that Nokia originally created for its own feature phones. But if the TENNA entry is correct, the Nokia 3310 with 4G could soon get a taste of the Android ecosystem thanks to YunOS.
Developed by Alibaba and based on the Android Open Source Project, this operating system could at least bring Android app support to the Nokia 3310, though at first glance, this doesn’t make much sense given the existing technical capabilities of the device.
YunOS has been a rather controversial product, as Google itself considers it to be an incompatible version of Android. Mostly based on cloud power, YunOS provides users with access to a third-party app store called Aliyun, which includes apps that aren’t necessarily legit, as they copy the name, look, and features of more popular titles, including some from Google.
While it’s not known if HMD is also planning some other hardware upgrades for this new version of the Nokia 3310, just a 4G upgrade will certainly not be enough to make the device a smartphone, especially if an Android-based operating system is being installed.
But on the other hand, there’s no doubt it’ll appeal to diehard Nokia fans who’d gladly purchase a new 3310 makeover, especially if its brings them close to today’s modern mobile platforms.
The Nokia 3310 with 4G support and all the other goodies could see daylight in early 2018, so it’ll be interesting to see how the legacy model makes its first step into the Android world.
