Android One phones operate under Google’s wing, too

Late last month, Google finally officially unveiled Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and yesterday the update started going out to supported Android devices, including the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus 7 (2013), and Nexus Player.

Naturally, we were expecting this to be the case since Google’s Nexus lineup is usually the first to be treated to the latest updates. But the search giant also has the Android One initiative under its wing. The program was kick-started by the company with the intent of offering really affordable smartphones in developing markets, bundled with stock-Android experience and fast updates.

But with Lollipop, Google failed to deliver the update in a timely manner, so we saw other device makers offer the new build to their models before the Android One bunch could get a taste of the new version.

Luckily, this year, Google has perfected the system, as it seems that hours before the Nexus bunch started to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Android One family started to get the new OS as well. For the time being, only the Spice Dream Uno is getting the sweet treatment, but we expect other models to be added to the queue soon (as spotted at Tech Droider).

The new build arrives in the form of an OTA (over-the-air) update and weighs 337.9MB (or 338.1MB for some other models), so you'd better make sure your battery is charged to over 60% before you start the installation process. As customary, the new OS version arrives in phases, so some devices might get it sooner than others, based on location.

The Spice Dream Uno was launched back in September 2014 and arrived with a 4.5-inch display with 480 x 854 pixel resolution. Taking care of business on board is a quad-core MediaTek 6582 chipset clocked at 1.3GHz fitted with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card slot up to 32GB).

The phone also features a 5MP/2.4MP camera setup and it initially shipped with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. The Spice Dream Uno was later updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop and now is getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Other Android One handsets available in India that might get Android 6.0 soon include the Lava Pixel V1, Micromax Canvas A1 and Karbon Sparkle V. But Google unveiled Android One models in many other countries like Indonesia, Myanmar, Turkey or Pakistan. Hopefully, these devices will be treated to the latest Android version soon enough too.
