Almost 2 weeks ago, during a screening of Amy Schumer’s newest comedy, “Trainwreck,” a man walked into a theater in Lafayette, Louisiana and started shooting. Before he turned the gun on himself, he had murdered 2 women and injured 9 other people.
Schumer was called out directly to take a stand against gun violence by lending her voice to those who lobby for gun control, but she mysteriously refused to and she’s been keeping silent until now.
That’s because she and New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who is actually her cousin, were busy working on a new initiative, which they announced in a press conference. You can see video of part of Amy’s speech below.
She urged for stricter background checks when selling guns, and stressed that gun control (and implicitly gun violence) is directly linked to mental health, which is another area where she feels there’s plenty of room for improvement.
As was to be expected, Amy’s stance for strict gun control has already gotten people who believe it would come in direct violation of the Second Amendment all riled up. In response, they suggest she stick to her comedy writing and reciting of lines, because her place is not in politics.
Grateful to @amyschumer for adding her talent & her voice to the nationwide call to put an end to #gunviolence. pic.twitter.com/tJyRdNyinw
