AMD quietly unveiled today a new release of its proprietary AMDGPU-PRO graphics driver for Linux-based operating systems, version 16.60, introducing support for older AMD Radeon GPUs from the GNC 1.0 / Southern Islands family.

According to the release notes, the biggest new feature of the AMDGPU-PRO 16.60 driver release is official support for the recently released CentOS 7.3 operating system, but install scripts were provided for CentOS 7.3 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 platforms since version 16.50.

While AMDGPU-PRO 16.50 graphics driver introduced support for more GPUs from the Southern Islands / GNC 1.0 series, namely AMD Radeon R7 M465X, AMD Radeon R7 M370, and AMD Radeon R7 M350, the AMDGPU-PRO 16.60 update appears to support even more of these older graphics cards (finally!).

These include AMD Radeon R7 M260, M265, M340, M350, M365, M370, M380, M465, and M465X, AMD Radeon R7 240, 250, 250X, 260, 260X, and 350, AMD Radeon HD7700, 7800, 8500, and 8600, as well as AMD Radeon HD7700M, 7800M, 8500M, 8530M, 8600M, 8700M, 8790M, and 8800M.

No more system hangs when launching Steam Client

Today's AMDGPU-PRO 16.60 graphics driver also addresses a few important issues reported by users since previous versions. These include a bug that could cause the entire system to hang when launching Steam Client, and a rendering error in the popular OpenGL test when running it in performance mode.

Additionally, it attempts to fix some hard-hangs problems that could sometimes be observed during hot-plug of the display. However, running this driver may cause system hangs with OpenCL, as well as a system boot failure on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 with DP1.2 enabled.

You can download the AMDGPU-PRO 16.60 proprietary graphics driver right now for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 or 6.8, CentOS 7.3 or 6.8, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 12 Service Pack 2, and  SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 2. Updating is recommended for all users running AMDGPU-PRO 16.50.
