The previous stable version was back in February

The AMD developers have announced that a new Catalyst Linux driver, 15.7, has been released and is now available for download. It's been a while since we had a stable version of the Catalyst driver, but it's still not all that impressive.

AMD has a strange schedule for their drivers, and they are released at a very slow pace. It's quite possible to have some Beta version of the driver as the best solution for months before seeing a stable release, and that is one of the problems of AMD on Linux. The lack of proper support has always been an issue, and the only way to solve this is for AMD to show that it really cares.

This apparent lack of interest (they do some great work directly with the Linux kernel) is also reflected in the way they treat some of the releases. Many of them don't have any kind of changelog, and it's difficult to find out what has been fixed, what's changed, and so on. Its rival Nvidia is doing a much better job in this aspect.

The AMD Catalyst 15.7 Linux Driver stable lands after a long time

AMD doesn't usually let us know what they are doing with their drivers, but now we have a changelog. It's not something out of the ordinary but does come with a few features, like AMD PowerXpress support for laptops equipped with Intel 6th generation (Skylake), support for Carrizo APUs, and multi-Device support for OpenCL 2.0.

Some smaller issues have been solved as well. According to the changelog, a segmentation fault observed while launching some OpenGL games in RHEL7.1 has been fixed, the OS no longer hangs while running Dying Light, and a couple more bug fixes have been corrected.

You can download the AMD Catalyst Linux 15.7 Linux driver right now from Softpedia, but it would be advisable to wait until the driver hits the official repos.
