“Internet” browser now available in India

Amazon has officially joined the ever-growing group of companies offering Android browsers with its very own so-called “Internet” app, now available for users in India.

While Amazon Internet isn’t supposed to be as advanced as other browsers on Android, it comes with the essential feature package and pays particular focus to how much space it eats up on your device.

Amazon says its Android browser is “extra small” because it weighs in just 2.4 MB, which means your space is saved “for videos, music, apps, and everything else.”

While it lacks functionality like add-on and extensions, Amazon Internet comes with a private mode to browse the Internet without leaving any trace behind. “It doesn’t ask for extra permissions or collect your private data like other browsers.”

And since it’s particularly aimed at the Indian market, Amazon’s browser also includes a news module with the focus on topics like cricket highlighted right on the home page.

There are no other features and just a basic settings screen, so everything’s pretty straightforward, with Amazon apparently aiming at Android users who want nothing more than a simple, fast, and secure browsing experience.

Android 5.0 and newer

Somewhat surprising is that Amazon has taken the wraps off the browser quietly without an official announcement. According to the Google Play Store listing, Amazon Internet was first published for download on March 20 and it supports Android 5.0 and newer.

At first glance, Amazon’s objective with this browser was to building something as lightweight as possible for the Indian market where high-speed Internet isn’t available to everyone. And because India is a continuously growing tech market where apps like Facebook Lite and YouTube Go are already experiencing particular success, a lighter browser that runs on limited resources could help Android expand here.

Even though it’s particularly aimed at users in India, anyone can give it a try with the APK file. You can download the Amazon Internet browser APK file from Softpedia right now.
