A few days ago, we reported that Sony might be the company that announces the most smartphones during next month’s MWC. It appears that Alcatel also intends to unveil five smartphones during the biggest tech event of the year, and one of the devices might be modular.

MWC 2017 is shaping up to be quite an exciting event, as LG, Sony, ZTE, Huawei and a number of other smartphone makers are expected to present their latest technology and products during the show in Barcelona.

A report from Tech2 (via GSMArena) reveals that Alcatel intends to unveil no less than five new smartphones during the Mobile World Congress. Alcatel’s market popularity has shrunk in the past few years, as other players in the industry offered new products with innovative technology that was more appealing to customers.

It appears that Alcatel is ready to take a risk and announce a new somewhat modular phone, according to the latest reports.

Leaked images reveal an interesting back panel on the phone

Modularity in smartphones is quite a gamble. On the one hand, Motorola and its Moto Z line with Moto Mods accessories were well received on the market. The modular accessories provided fun and useful features for users to enhance the capabilities of their Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play handsets.

On the other hand, LG’s G5 and ‘Friends’ failed to appeal to the market, resulting in LG ditching the modular design for the G6 successor. Alcatel is apparently taking a different approach and will be providing users with the option to change the back case on the phone.

The device’s back case will be made out of LEDs which glow in different colors, depending on music, as the leaked images reveal. However, since so many exciting phones will be announced this year, we expect Alcatel to offer some more practical and modular features to the new device.

The smartphone will also come with dual-tone LED flash on the rumored 13MP camera. It will be powered by an unspecified MediaTek chipset with octa-core processor. The price is rumored to reach $320 and the phone should be unveiled during Alcatel’s press conference on February 26.
