The tablet looks like a turntable more than anything

We’ve been arguing in an earlier piece that tablet sales have been getting more and more sluggish lately because device manufacturers have failed to bring something new and fresh to the table.

What’s more, we haven’t seen all that many new tablet models grace the market, so it seems like slate makers have given up on the niche altogether. Or maybe they are just re-grouping in order to cook up something that has the potential to be more exciting than your average tablet model.

Alcatel OneTouch was also present during the IFA 2015 tradeshow in Berlin, where it unveiled a new tablet device that comes with an atypical form factor.

We’ve been hearing rumors that Samsung was prepping to unleash an 18-inch slate, but before the Korean tech giant has had a chance to do so, Alcatel managed to jump ahead and unveiled the ginormous OneTouch Xess (as spotted at Liliputing).

Fancy an enormous Android tablet?

The device boasts a 17.3-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and the company says it is perfect to be used in different environments, including the kitchen. The tablet comes with a built-in stand that can angle it at 70, 50 or 30 degrees, depending on your necessities.

The stand looks quite odd and it doesn’t really seem to be all that stable, a bit on the slippery side of things. Sitting face down, the tablet actually looks like some sort of turntable/mixer waiting for the DJ to show up.

OneTouch Xess draws power from an octa-core MediaTek MT8783T processor in combination with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card slot). It also comes with a 5MP frontal snapper for taking selfies while you’re bored waiting for the pop roast to get a crust.

Moreover, it appears that the tablet also has a stylus included into the bundle.

Other specifications include dual speakers, a USB 2.0 port, and a massive 10,000 mAh battery (let’s face it, a massive slob like this needs a big juice box). All these goodies are packed in a body that is 9.15mm / 0.36 inches thick.

Alcatel hasn’t said anything about pricing specifications for the OneTouch Xess, nor when we can expect to be able to grab it. Would you consider picking up such a huge device?
