These days, staff at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, US, have their hands full looking after a pair of utterly adorable red panda cubs born at this facility earlier this year, on June 26.

The cubs, a boy named Clark and a girl named Addison, were born to mother Leafa and proud dad Phoenix. Being very young and quite fearful of the great outdoors, they have not yet made their public debut.

Instead, they are hidden from curious gazes in a den they share with their mother. To make sure all is well, staff monitor the family at all times with the help of a special camera.

“Their eyes are open now, which is a big development for red panda cubs, and it looks like they've doubled in size since their physical last week,” curator Mark Kamhout told Zoo Borns in an interview.

When they were born, the cubs only weighed about 4 to 5 ounces (0.11 to 0.14 kilograms). Although considerably bigger now that they are nearly a month and a half old, they still have their yellow coat.

As they mature, however, their fur will turn bright red to match their parents'.

Zoo staff promise that, as soon as they grow confident enough to handle all the pressure that comes with being in the limelight, the cubs will come out of the den to greet the public.
