Extensions are on their way to Microsoft’s browser

One of the biggest feature improvements coming in future Windows 10 updates is extension support for Edge browser, and looking at the recent leaks, this new addition is just around the corner.

Adblock Plus, one of the most popular browser extensions currently available out there, will also come with support for Edge browser, the official website now states, but information on when exactly to expect this launch is not yet available.

What we do know, however, is that Adblock Plus will bring on Edge browser the same functionality as on the other apps, including Firefox and Chrome, so it’ll be able to block tracking malware domains, banners, pop-ups, and video ads. It can also block ads on Facebook and YouTube, but users will be allowed to whitelist clean websites where banners are not intrusive in any way.

Popular feature request

Right now, ad blockers are the most requested feature for the new browser, and posts in this regard in the Windows 10 Feedback app have thousands of votes.

But while Microsoft isn’t willing to develop its very own ad blocker and integrate it into the browser by default, third-parties will actually create extensions to do that, so in addition to Adblock Plus, expect all the others that are currently available for Chrome and Firefox to debut with Edge support as well.

Extension support for Microsoft Edge will arrive as part of the Redstone update in the summer of 2016, but Microsoft is very close to releasing a preview build to insiders that could include such functionality. It will take many months before the feature is fully refined, but if everything goes according to plan, all Google Chrome extensions should run on Edge very smoothly when Redstone is ready.

It’s all a matter of time until this functionality arrives on Microsoft Edge, so fingers crossed to get it in the next build release for Windows insiders.
