The launch comes a year late, but at least it's happening

Monitors from Acer and ASUS featuring Nvidia’s G-Sync HDR technology are finally coming out in 2018, a year later than initially announced.

Nvidia’s G-Sync technology has been around for some time, although it didn’t take off as expected. The fact that gaming monitors with G-Sync are considerably more expensive than the rest doesn’t help.

Syncing the refresh rate to the FPS in games might not seem like a big deal, but it is. There are some software solutions implemented directly in video cards, but having hardware in the monitors is much more efficient.

And then we have HDR for displays which is a technology that allows the adjustment of lighting in different parts of the screen. Marrying HDR and G-Sync proved to be a tough nut to crack, but monitors featuring the two techs should become available in 2018.

In monitor with at least 4K resolution support

The gaming market is slowly moving towards 4K and beyond, which can be achieved by the latest graphics cards with ease. AnandTech talked with Nvidia at GDC, and the company was able to confirm that 4K 144 Hz displays with both G-Sync and HDR support should be available in 2018, in April.

In fact, Nvidia can also demo the new technology with ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ and Acer Predator X27. “The backlight illuminates the screen, and with 384 individually-controllable LED backlight zones, light will only be shown when and where it is required, enabling G-SYNC HDR displays to simultaneously produce bright bold colors and deep blacks, reminiscent of the very best plasma displays,” reads the official announcement.

It’s important to keep in mind that G-Sync was first introduced back in 2013, and we have yet to see it integrated at larger scales. The new displays will not be cheap, and if the technology proves to have mass appeal, it will take a couple of years before we see it available everywhere.
