Apology makes no difference with viewers, backlash continues

Controversy can be good for publicity and ratings, but this is not the case here: ABC’s flailing morning talk show The View is again in a pickle. This time, it has nothing to do with the lineup of co-hosts, as we’ve become accustomed to happen, but with a series of comments made by Joy Behar the other day.

She’s already apologized for them, but the backlash continues. This time, it’s not just empty talk either, because 2 major sponsors, Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best, have pulled out their ads from the show, The Wrap reports.

On Sunday, Miss America 2015 took place, and a favorite moment of the pageant was when Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson came up during the talent segment, dressed in her nurse’s scrubs, and delivered a monolog about one of her Alzheimer’s patients.

The next day, while discussing the pageant, the ladies on The View mocked Johnson for the monolog, with Behar taking issue with the fact that she came up “in costume” as a nurse. As per her apology from the next day, she said she didn’t pay attention and had no idea that Johnson was a nurse in real life.

The outrage was instantaneous and so severe that even the American Nurses Association got involved. #NursesUnite started trending on social media, with millions urging The View to issue a formal apology.

According to Johnson & Johnson and Eggland’s Best, the one Behar delivered the next day wasn’t enough. You can see their statements in full by clicking the button below, but the gist is that they can’t continue a partnership with a show that doesn’t value or respect nurses the way they deserve to be.
