Apple’s future iPhone lineup may include a model offering dual-SIM capabilities, according to new evidence discovered in the most recent iOS 12 developer beta.

While it’s not yet clear if this dual-SIM iPhone might be released this year or not, it looks like Apple is already working on such capabilities for a future generation.

As 9to5mac reports, iOS 12 developer beta 5 includes code for a second SIM status and a second SIM tray status, which is technically a sign that Apple is building an iPhone that would work with two different SIM cards.

While no other specifics are available right now, there’s also a chance that Apple may be working on an eSIM iPhone that would also offer a standard SIM tray for those markets where such an option isn’t available.

Cheaper iPhone might feature dual-SIM

Apple will launch three different iPhone models this year, and one of them would come with a lower price tag to be specifically aimed at markets like China and India.

There’s a chance this particular iPhone could get dual-SIM capabilities as well, as this approach could help Apple tackle the growth of rival Android devices in these markets where such features are particularly important for buyers.

The more affordable iPhone won’t necessarily be low-cost, however. It’ll feature a 6.1-inch LCD panel, but Apple would employ several cost-saving measures, including downgrading the device from a dual-camera system on the back to a single-lens unit. Furthermore, wireless charging will almost certainly be unavailable on this model.

The device could cost somewhere around $700, though it may become substantially more affordable with data plans offered by carriers in these markets.

The debut of the new iPhones will take place, as it happens every year, in September, while sales should begin later the same month. Apple may also decide to hold back the LCD version for a little longer until October, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.
