iPod outsold Zune. At a first glance, this may be the nucleus of the news, but in fact, everything outsold Zune. Microsoft's digital media player has dropped in Amazon.com's bestselling electronics
list to number 88. That's just 12 steps away from number 100, and the list stops there. Zune is right on track of falling out of sight.
And maybe you thought I was exaggerating when I said that everything outsold Zune. Well, in the same list, the 87th position is occupied by a 50-pack of Memorex Data CD-R Media. Meanwhile, Apple 30 GB iPod video Black is the absolute bestseller of Amazon.com.
The runner up is Apple 2 GB iPod Nano Silver. The Apple 1 GB Shuffle Metal is forth, the Apple 80 GB iPod video Black is fifth, the Apple 4 GB iPod Nano Pink is sixth. I'm going to stop here. I'm sure that you have made an idea about Zune's popularity and success.
While Zune was lagging behind in sales, Apple grabbed five spots in Amazon.com's top 10. Additionally, the Cupertino based company has a total of 10 products among the top 25 spots.
What you have to consider is the fact that Microsoft's Zune has been released for just two weeks. The digital media player from the Redmond Company was anticipated to be an iPod killer. In fact, Zune is the one being killed. But iPod's market success has little to do with it. Zune is doing it all by itself.
First off, the device's software fails and crashes, the wireless capabilities are time inefficient, the Zune Marketplace is far from displaying luxuriant and diversified content, then there are the copyright limitations, the weak battery and the design. In its debut week, Zune was in Amazon.com's first top ten. Add just another week and Zune has some 80+ positions. If it continues to go this well with consumers, the Microsoft digital media player is going to have a short lived existence.
