Rumors about the Zune Software coming to Windows Mobile have been circling around for some time now, yet they were never officially confirmed, thus making everybody think that it was just wishful thinking. Even it if wasn't so - or if it was and it paid off -, one thing is for certain: a Microsoft CEO has confirmed the fact that Zune Software will be ported on Windows Mobile devices.

Finally, the rumor became official at the Microsoft’s London conference “Technologies to Change Your Business: How Customers Are Implementing Tomorrow’s Strategies Today,” where CIO's Martin Veitch interviewed Steve Ballmer.

When asked about the reason why Microsoft developed Zune, Microsoft CEO Ballmer replied that “At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we don’t have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player.“ He then continued by saying that, “we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you’ll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc.”

In case you are wondering what Zune Software is, you should know that it functions like a management software for the device and the library on it, but also as a client for the online music store. Zune Software also includes the Zune Marketplace, music, video and free broadcast stores. So, basically, Zune Software is a more advanced Windows Media Player, from which one of the first versions was originally developed (the old version was in fact a modified version of Windows Media Player 11, but the latest version is built from the ground up).
