Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have been named some of the biggest philanthropists of 2012 for their charity donations which amounted to around $500 million, €372 million, depending on Facebook stock price.

In fact, only billionaire Warren Buffett, one of the richest men on Earth, gave more, some $3.1 billion, €2.3 billion in donations last year alone.

The Zuckerbergs made a pledge to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation which aims to help low-income families, develop educational projects and so on, all focused on the local community.

The money will be spread out over time and over many projects, Zuckerberg will get a say into where it all goes.

Also on the list of top philanthropists in the US last year, compiled by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, are Google's Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki who made pledges worth $223 million, €166 million in 2012.
