Actress and former glamour girl Zsa Zsa Gabor will have her lower leg amputated. She was rushed to the hospital hours ago, after a lesion on her leg extended and festered, making doctors fear gangrene would set in.
The star has been having health problems for nearly half a year, when she fell from her bed and broke several of her bones. Later on, she developed the lesion on her leg that forced doctors to rush to her house on Sunday for an emergency amputation.
Zsa Zsa’s husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, tells
People that, while the surgery is a must, it is guaranteed it will offer the star a few more years of life. It was, however, a decision she’s already put off for too long.
According to Anhalt, doctors told Gabor she needed to have surgery a while back but she said she wanted to spend the holidays at home with her family, believing it would be the last time she was able to do so.
“They just picked her up. They may have to take her leg from the knee down. She wanted to stay home and have a holiday. They wanted to do this before the holiday, but now the doctors have forced us,” Anhalt says.
Gabor was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and she immediately went into surgery. Her husband and doctors have utmost faith in her ability to recover quickly. “She is strong,” Anhalt says.
“She will lose the lower half of her leg below the knee. It’s a dangerous operation, but the upside is that, if successful, she will remain her same old feisty self for a few more years,” Gabor’s rep says for the same magazine.
“Frederic and Zsa Zsa asked if they could spend New Year’s at home, and [they] shared champagne and caviar. The doctors came to the house today [Sunday], and when they unwrapped the bandages, [they saw that] the wound had festered and they were afraid of gangrene developing, which would be life-threatening,” the rep explains for People.
