An Ubuntu-based operating system aimed at Windows users that are switching over to Linux, Zorin OS, has now reached version 5.2.

Zorin OS is built on the Linux architecture so it is completely open source and it's based on Ubuntu Linux.

This is the second update in the Zorin OS 5 series. Unlike the previous versions, this one falls back to GNOME 2.x classic environment instead of Ubuntu’s Unity shell.

It's unclear why they took this step back in development, but it's probably related to the criticism  Ubuntu’s Unity shell has received lately.

Zorin OS 5.2 also includes an updated Linux kernel, various security updates, upgraded programs, an all-new window border theme, an updated icon theme and an overhauled sound theme that features a fresh, new start-up sound.

I am impressed with the speed of Zorin. I have two older XP computers. One a 11 year old Milwaukee PC with a 40 gig hard drive, and 256 of ram upgrade with another 128 ram. It runs faster than new. The other is a HP that had 512 ram and I upgraded that to one gig. It has an AMD processor and 160 gig hard drive. It is now faster than my Windows 7 with 3 gig of ram. Zorin also comes with most apps pre-installed. I removed what I did not want with the package manager that removes all the parts of the package. It kind of protects new users from themselves. It came with Chrome for a browser which was a disappointment but Firefox was easily added. It also comes with Wine and Play on Linux pre-installed. This is nice as in Mint and Lubuntu I had to install it at least three times and in Mint could not get the codecs package to work as it was broken. Also in Mint 12 my computer froze and on reboot my package manager didn't work and I was unable to fix it. I think it is a great, fast system that helps the new user keep out of trouble. It comes with almost any software you would want. It also has Ubuntu tweak which will clean up removed packages. Easy wireless connection.
