In a world where the iPad sells for about $500 and any other tablets seem to stick close to this figure, Creative introduced a certain device which utilizes less than ordinary hardware in order to strike a price half as high.

There is little doubt that Android-running tablets are gaining traction, so it is hardly surprising to hear that another one has appeared.

This once, whoever, the device that drew attention was a bit more peculiar than those that came before it, at least as far as the hardware is concerned.

So far, most slates previewed or outright released have either been equipped with an Intel CPU (Atom) or the NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC.

Creative decided to play the exception card so it put together a 7-inch Android 2.1 slate which features a ZiiLABS ZMS-08 processor at its heart.

This processor is complemented by the apt-X audio codec and the X-Fi Crystalizer technology, for high quality audio.

The product page of the device claims that games and movies are also within the realm of the ZiiO Android tablet's capabilities.

Additionally, the newcomer's 7-inch display boasts a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, while the exact size of the tablet is 207.4 x 133 x 13.7 mm.

Other specifications include a front-facing VGA camera, an accelerometer, an USB port and either 8 GB or 16 GB of internal storage. Combined with the above, all of these put together weight a total of 400 grams.

Those interested in more specifics will like to know that the long list of supported audio and video formats includes MP3, AAC, WMA9, FLAC, OGG, MIDI, WAV, Audible Format, H.264, MPEG4, WMV9, MOV, AVI and MKV.

Needless to say, JPG, BMP and PNG picture types are also among the kinds of files that the ZiiO slate can handle.

Those interested in acquiring the newcomer will have to part with $249.99 for the 8 GB tablet and $269.99 for the 16 GB model.
