The development team at Volition that worked on the very successful Saints Row series says that it has started development on a new post-apocalyptic title called Zeus, which was then canceled because the company simply did not have time to create it.

The game was supposed to use an open world structure and would have been set to arrive on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft.

Zeus was supposed to take place in a future version of Rio and would have used a set of Western conventions, with a hardened gunslinger set to explore a lawless and broken city, mostly moving on foot between areas while battling a variety of enemies.

During a Game Developer Conference, Greg Donovan, a senior producer working at Volition, is quoted by Shacknews as saying that "Right or wrong, we know we could've made this game. But it would've taken too long," he added. "It wouldn't have been the responsible thing to do."

The studio might have abandoned Zeus, but it is still working on new intellectual property and the developer says that the experience it obtained from the closed down project will help it with its new top secret title, which is also headed to next-gen platforms.
