Bethesda Softworks, the growing video game publisher that is wholly owned by ZeniMax, has not actually announced any MMO project it is working on, but the company is already preparing for the task of supporting such a video game project, saying that it has created a new customer support facility.
ZeniMax Online chose Galway, in Ireland, as the location for the new facility and says that hundreds of jobs will be created there in the coming years, with recruits drawn from the well-educated local population.
Matt Firor, who is one of the co-founders of Mythic Entertainment, a company that has a lot of experience with MMO development, is the leader of
ZeniMax Online.
He says that, “Today's announcement marks an important step for us. We are excited to be building an experienced team, led by Rich, which will focus on providing superior customer support for our games.”
He praised the location of the studio, adding, “Galway has world-class educational facilities, is a beautiful place to work and live, and offers a wide variety of benefits for our employees. Our ability to provide superior customer service for our future products is firmly on track.”
The customer support division at ZeniMax Online is being headed by Rich Barham, who has previously worked at Blizzard Entertainment, the creator of World of Warcraft, the best-performing subscription-based MMO.
Bethesda has a growing portfolio of important game franchises, including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Doom.
It's not clear which of them could be turned into an MMO in the near future and could be served by the new Galway support center.
Bethesda is engaged in a long court battle with Interplay over the right to create a Fallout MMO and the company might actually be working in secrecy on such a project, waiting for the legal hurdles to be overcome.
