It doesn't seem possible, and yet tragedies do happen. I'm kidding. It's funny how things work in Hollywood, especially when it comes to the young generation of heartthrobs - and it's also true that I was half-expecting this to happen months ago. However, scandal didn't bring Disney's golden couple down, but Zac Efron's narcissism did. I'm talking, of course, about that wonderful on screen and off screen couple from Disney's High School Musical franchise, made up of Zac "Oh, help, I have a pimple" Efron and Vanessa "I look good naked" Hudgens. And if anyone out there thought their love would last forever, they were unfortunately very wrong. And not only was Zac the one who ended the relationship, but he apparently did it right after Vanessa's birthday and a week before Christmas - over the phone. Yes, it takes a real man to do that...
"They've been together for a long time, and he didn't even call her to wish her a Merry Christmas. She was crushed!" says a source quoted by the National Enquirer. "Zac wants to move on, start seeing other girls. He's had no shortage of women hitting him up to become Vanessa's replacement. Zac's got enough numbers to fill a phone book!" added the same source. Well, I think that he could have at least bothered to break the news to her in person. Such a cold-hearted teenage heartthrob! It's even more ironic that Vanessa is said to have been taken completely by surprise, all the more so since she had just celebrated her 19th birthday and Zac had given her a brand-new black Audi S4 convertible (that matched his, no less) as a birthday present. Well, guilt is a very powerful motivator, you know. At least she can keep the car...
Vanessa is said to cope with Efron's betrayal by hanging out with her friend and High School Musical co-star Ashley Tisdale, while Zac is probably savoring his newly-found liberty and planning which girl to go after next. I don't think Vanessa will have too much trouble finding a replacement, either - but what will the people at Disney say? And what happens to the credibility of the on-screen Efron/Hudgens couple when the new Hight School Musical installment comes out? Well, I suppose the Mickey Mouse people are beginning to get used to being stabbed in the back by their young proteges, so I'm sure they'll work something out. In the meantime, guys, Vanessa's a free woman - so what are you waiting for?
