ZZT is an ANSI-based computer game created in 1991 by Tim Sweeney, of Epic Games (then Epic Megagames), who later designed

Unreal. It remains one of the most popular DOS game creation systems. ZZT itself is not an acronym for anything; its title was simply chosen so it would always appear at the very bottom of newsgroup listings. However, it was later jokingly mentioned by Sweeney as being short for Zoo of Zero Tolerance, which has mistakenly become a popular belief.

ZZT's graphics were obsolete before it was even created; it used the same style of text-mode graphics that Kingdom of Kroz had four years earlier. However, ZZT managed to become fairly popular because of its integration of a simple but effective object-oriented scripting language known as ZZT-OOP.

CHEATS

Hold Shift and press ? during game play. Enter one of the following codes in the black box to activate the corresponding cheat function.

All keys - keys

Clear surrounding four squares - zap

Ammunition - ammo

Debug mode on - debug

Debug mode off - -debug

Full health - health

Gain torches - torches

Darken room - dark

Lighten room - -dark

GAMEPLAY HINTS

Faster game play
Intentionally die, then enable the health code. The game over message will disappear, and you can continue the game at a much faster speed.

Invisible demon
You must defeat the invisible demon in the Caves of ZZT, when going to get the key in Hell. The demon will only stay on the sides of the room.

Cage area
You can press the blocks one at a time and not release animals in the cage area after passing through the castle . However, you will not receive any points from them.

Restart after you have lost
If you get killed by anything that will not indefinitely reproduce, after everything speeds up, wait until every creature gets to you, then enable the health code. This will give you 50 health points. Save the game, quit, then reload your game.
