Chinese manufacturer is looking to give smartwatches a chance

Google’s wearable platform Android Wear seems to be capturing the imagination of more and more brand vendors.

As recent TENAA documents show us, Chinese smartphone maker ZTE is also looking to make a plunge into Android (not sure about the Wear part).

The documents uncovered by GizChina show us ZTE is in the process of designing and testing an Android smartwatch, following in the footsteps of Motorola, Samsung and LG.

Sadly, our excitement is tempered by how the smartwatch actually seems to look. The wearable appears to be quite bulky and with a plasticky feel to it. It comes with a square-looking design, but even the original Samsung Galaxy smartwatch is fancier.

The strap appears to be also made of plastic, giving us the sensation that ZTE is actually working on a kid-friendly wearable, so it’s not looking to invest in premium materials.

It’s quite odd to see a smartwatch appear on Tenaa, which is a governmental website reserved mostly for smartphones and tablets, but here it is.

In all possibility, the new ZTE watch will be something akin to the Omate timepiece which runs a forked version of Android and offers phone calling features, so don’t hold your breath on seeing a full-fledged Android Wear device arrive under the ZTE banner any time soon.
