Smartwatches were attempted before, but until Samsung made a fuss over the Galaxy Gear back in September, at IFA 2013, most people didn’t know or care. Now, hype is so high that ZTE wants in.

Long story short, ZTE has set an ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) for its own smartwatch, which we've only just learned is in the works.

It didn't give the watch a name, it didn't say what it could do, exactly, and it didn't even say what it was going to look like.

ZTE's head of handset marketing Lv Qianhao just piped up and said (told Wall Street Journal really) that a ZTE Android watch would be released next year, in the first quarter of 2014.

It will be an extension of the smartphone. True, it will do things on its own, but most of the apps (likely photo/video recording program, taking calls, etc.) will work only when a Bluetooth link with a phone is active.

Sales of the ZTE smartwatch will be limited to China at first, the company's home country.
