Despite Apple’s claims of a stronger, scratch-resistant iPhone 4 screen, third-party accessory makers still push protective film onto future customers

ZAGG Inc., a company promoting itself as being dedicated to protecting and enhancing the mobile experience, has started shipping the invisibleSHIELD scratch-protection design and ZAGGskins customizable protection for the new Apple iPhone 4. ZAGG is not the only company that believes the iPhone 4’s screen is prone to getting damaged.

The invisibleSHIELD is ZAGG's “military-grade, virtually invisible and indestructible film,” which “protects devices from bumps, scratches, and dings,” the company claims. “ZAGG believes that Apple’s new iPhone 4 release will have a significant impact upon the company. We are already shipping our premium protection and mobile accessories to support it, and they are available on our website today,” Robert G. Pedersen II, CEO and co-founder of ZAGG, says.

Interestingly, Apple says pretty much the same thing about its iPhone 4’s screen. “Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.”

If Apple is to be believed, iPhone 4 buyers would never need an accessory like Zagg’s invisibleSHIELD scratch-protection film. Still, it is fair to assume that the company’s scratch-resistant film will provide additional protection, especially if it boasts self-healing qualities, as ZAGG claims.

“The iPhone 4 is a beautiful device with amazing engineering that customers will want to show off and protect at the same time,” Derek Smith, vice president of sales for ZAGG, explains. “The original invisibleSHIELD will allow iPhone users to do exactly that, without compromising either the appearance or the function of the device, and without having to cover it up with a bulky case.”
