eBay gets filled with offers for the vintage player

An iconic product that many associate with the rise of Apple after Steve Jobs’ historic return in 1997, the iPod Classic is no longer available on Apple Store shelves or online at store.apple.com. But you can still find some, including sealed units. If you know where to look.

It’s common knowledge that eBay is the best place to look to find any discontinued product at any time. It’s not the only such place on the Internet, but it’s certainly the safest and most reliable one. And it’s currently packed to the rafters with iPod Classics.

Not for long, though

Apple only recently discontinued the Classic, so it’s pretty obvious why people who no longer use them are trying to squeeze a buck out of their beat-up players. But we’re not here to talk about the ones with cracks in their screens. We’re here to talk about the factory-sealed models selling for the price of an iPhone 6.

For example, one seller says he has a “FACTORY SEALED~Apple iPod classic 7th Generation 160 GB Black (NEWEST MODEL)” and sells it for $599.95 (€487), which is about as much as you’d pay for a brand new iPhone 6 today. Why would someone be tempted to buy the player for such an exorbitant price? Four reasons:

1. It’s a piece of Apple history – a marker of the reignited interest in the company’s products; 2. It looks awesome and has a straightforward interface that lets you focus on the music without any distractions (it even plays video); 3. It can hold tens of thousands of songs on its built-in 160GB hard drive; 4. It will be worth a fortune later on.

Don’t open it just yet

If you like that last reason, then you should have probably caught our drift. If you have a factory-sealed unit laying around somewhere, don’t pop the lid and just let it ripe for a while. Don’t think you can’t get more than $599.95 (€487) for it next week or next month. With the passing of each day, the value of your Classic iPod will increase, eventually being worth more than a brand new Mac. Trust us, we’ve seen it happen over and over again. The only problem is that you have to be patient.

On the other hand, if you have one that has already been opened, by all means you can hit up eBay right now and try to fetch a price. There are thousands out there just craving this player. So if you’re willing to part with it for a few hundred bucks, now’s the best time to do that.
