Twitter is messing around with its APIs again, prompting vendors of third-party Twitter clients to update their respective apps in order to comply with a new set of rules by which these apps communicate with the servers.

One of the affected parties is iOS developer Tapbots, whose Tweetbot app will stop being functional as of May 29. Released on May 24, Tweetbot versions 2.8.8 and 3.3.2 are required to continue to use Twitter uninterrupted. According to the App Store descriptions, “This is a critical update. Previous versions of Tweetbot 2 for iPad will stop functioning soon.”

The developer directs customers to the Tapbots blog for more information. There, the company explains that “A couple weeks ago Twitter’s Platform Operations group contacted us and asked us to make a small change to the way Tweetbot communicates with the Twitter API.”

Although the API changes will have no effect on the functionality of Tweetbot as a service, versions prior to the aforementioned 2.8.8 and 3.3.2 will stop working. Tapbots explains:

“This change will have no affect on the way Tweetbot works, however two things will occur once this change goes live. All versions of Tweetbot prior to 2.8.8 or 3.3.2 will stop working and you may need to log into your account again.”

Customers are urged to ensure they are running the latest version of the app and to log in once more to ensure proper functionality. The final changes will be made on May 29 at 10 A.M. PST, so customers should enable their new Tweetbot apps before that deadline is reached.
