Pebble has been around ever since smartwatches started making headlines. The company has undergone a highly successful Kickstarter project which resulted into the launch of several products.

But the competition is getting tougher and tougher. Device makers like ASUS, LG or Samsung have already launched several smartwatches with various form factors and OS-es, not to mention Apple has announced its highly anticipated Watch.

Pebble is prepping something amazing

So Pebble needs to come up with something really amazing to continue luring customers onboard. According to TechRadar, the company has a lot of neat surprises in store for us. The next-gen Pebble is going to arrive in Q1 next year and will be “more everything…more beautiful, more thin. Just say “more” then insert adjectives.”

Of course, the company couldn’t reveal all secrets and is leaving a lot to the imagination, but Pebble’s Myriam Joire did slip out a few details. According to her, the smartwatch will be highly customizable, which means it will go way beyond its current choices of plastic or metal body and straps.

So basically, the next-gen Pebble could turn out to be a modular smartwatch. Modular smart devices have been getting a lot of attention lately. Google has its own project Ara dedicated to smartphones, as for wearables we already discussed Blocks.

Not so long ago, Blocks was just a concept hoping to give users a chance to design their smartwatch according to their needs. For example, sporty people could bundle their watch with all kinds of sensors, while business professionals could install useful apps like calendar and reminders.

It will be interesting if Pebble offered similar options too. However, we’re told that the next-gen watch will be more of “an evolution and not a revolution.” Which doesn't mean you won’t be seeing some revolutionary elements onboard.

Pebble to continue with E-Ink

For example, Pebble is going to maintain the E-ink, which is great on battery life. Sure, AMOLED displays are nice, but the company considers the benefits of a long life cycle more important.

Back in August, we told you of a leak which supposedly showcased the upcoming Pebble smartwatch. The device was showed boasting a color display, but we couldn't tell you of which variety.

So we ended up hypothesizing it might be the kind Qualcomm’s Toq smartwatch uses, which is an E-Ink display (the so-called Mirasol display technology).

This seems to be in league with what the company official said. Pebble’s next-gen watch plans to continue using E-Ink display due to their awesome power efficiency. So the LCD scenario doesn't seem to be likely.
