Phishing scam targets Apple users, prompting them to hand over credit card info

Hoax Slayer reports on the emergence of a new phishing scam that targets Apple customers, requesting them to submit their Apple ID and password along with their credit card information.

The hoax comes in the form of a very traditional email purporting to be stemming from Apple’s Security Department. Apple doesn’t have a “Security Department” that talks to the general population.

The email reads, “Your Apple ID, was just used to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID. [...] If you did not initiate this download, you have to confirm your account and validate your informations.”

Users are then told to download an attached document and fill in the included form with their credentials.

“All the information submitted on the fake from can be harvested by criminals and used to hijack the real Apple accounts belonging to victims,” Hoax Slayer warns. “The criminals may also conduct fraudulent credit card transactions and try to steal the identities of victims.”

Needless to point out, all you need to do is ignore this email (and others like it) if you’re unsure it comes from Apple.
