The very popular video sharing Web Site,
YouTube will finally be available on mobile phones, through Verizon Wireless'
service Vcast.
To be able to view videos on the mobile version of YouTube, Verizon customers will have to pay a $15 monthly fee to subscribe to Vcast, and will be able to view random user-generated content or even post videos from their mobile phones by using a five-digit code.
But instead of choosing exactly what they want to watch, mobile YouTube users will be limited to a number of selected, pre-approved video clips.
Considering the fact that although a large number of customers own a Vcast-capable handheld, and only a very small number of them have subscribed to the wireless media service, YouTube's 'appearance' on Vcast might help boost the popularity of the service and implicitly the number of users.
The service is said to be available starting from early next month and neither
Verizon Wireless nor YouTube revealed anything about the financial terms.
Verizon is also said to have exclusive rights to distribute YouTube content on mobile phones, for a period of time. By introducing a mobile version of YouTube to Verizon customers, Verizon might not necessarily 'sell' more Vcast.
Many users might prefer to use YouTube on their PC for free rather than pay extra for a limited version of YouTube.
