Recently, YouTube made the first step to the political area after it agreed to publish numerous clips with the Presidential candidates for the US election campaign. Today, a new similar case was reported in Pittsburgh where the candidates for the mayor of the second largest city in Pennsylvania uploaded multiple videos on YouTube's page. It seems like the candidates already posted several home made videos to sustain their campaigns in order to become the mayor of the city.
"I think this is the first time YouTube has been
used in a Pittsburgh mayoral campaign. It's no cost, and it allows a message to be heard that's beyond the typical sound bite," said councilman and candidate Bill Peduto, 42, of Point Breeze according to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
I must agree that promoting your political campaign, ideas or opinions using an online video sharing service like YouTube can be very useful because the solution is available for free without any investment for the clips. As one of the candidates mentioned, it is extremely affordable especially if you create your own videos without having to invest for professional equipment.
Although YouTube encountered numerous problems, it seems like the video service is continuously attracting more and more users because the company reported an impressive boost of traffic just after the Viacom removal was officially confirmed. As you know, Viacom, the owner of Comedy Central and MTV, demanded the video service to remove almost 100.000 clips from the page because the company doesn't pay for the content it receives.
In this period, YouTube is regarded as a service used to promote your own story and less for sharing clips because numerous users were attracted by the Google product. For example, a US policeman uploaded a surveillance video to identify a suspect using the members' help.
