After the survey data released at the middle of November that had YouTube portrayed as a good and reliable advertising media, for only a fifth of the total number of all the advertisers that tried it, Google decided that it wanted its buck back at a much faster rate.
Although only rarely spotted and that after a looooong wait and an increased number of movies watched, the ads that run in the video window (as you can see on the left) are present.
This must mean that YouTube is ramping up its monetization like papa Google said and that it is currently experimenting with presenting different types of ads to users, for their reactions.
The graphic overlay that is currently being run is the latest gimmick to turn up, Hulu being the first one to announce it and, just last week, AOL launched a similar program to eschew pre-roll advertisements, dubbed Video Ticker Ads. This way of advertising was first introduced in the summer on YouTube, but just as a side dish to the more traditional "Ads by Google" main course. Here's a part of the press release back then:
"As part of the YouTube Marketing Platform, YouTube is working with select partners to improve the presentation of advertising on their content on our site, in a manner that brings our community compelling and creative content, and should increase revenue flows back to artists and content owners. With this announcement, we are launching YouTube InVideo Ads. This model is the outcome of weeks of testing, resulting in a video overlay and format that is highly engaging and relevant, yet does not disrupt the user experience. The YouTube community will have greater access to exceptional video content and relevant advertising, while content providers, from media companies to users, can now deliver more of their creative content to users while earning revenue. Now, advertisers will have more targeted vehicles to reach their audiences in an innovative and relevant way. Most importantly, all of this will be available on a user-initiated basis only." The part that changed in the meantime is the last one, with the "user initiated basis only" as you might have gathered.
By the looks of it, with the increase in quality that is being aimed at by everyone in the industry, the band at the bottom won't bother anyone or at least not nearly as much as it would now, when YouTube is running some pretty low quality videos and besides the strain to clearly understand what's going on there, your eyes would be invariably drawn to the perfect quality of the band. But then again, I do believe that's the idea, isn't it?
