Mark Cuban, co-founder of HDNet and owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks considers that only a moron will buy YouTube. Following selling speculations and the initiation of a public offer by the
San Mateo-based video entertainment website, Cuban issued abrupt comments regarding a potential acquisition of YouTube. According to Cuban, YouTube is nothing than a mass of unlicensed copyrighted materials that would eventually generate massive infringement lawsuits. Consequently, the copyright violations will result in YouTube being "sued into oblivion."
"They are just breaking the law," Cuban stated. "There is a reason they haven't yet gone public, they haven't sold. It's because they are going to be toasted. The only reason it hasn't been sued yet is because there is nobody with big money to sue."
YouTube may not have big money as yet, but it's slowly negotiating its way into a multi billion business by introducing advertising opportunities and by pushing licensed distribution of video content, the recent agreement inked with Warner Music Group serving as an illustrative example. Once YouTube will enter a legal environment, the traffic attracted by the video sharing website will instantly turn into gold. Maybe another reason why YouTube has not been already crucified in a court room is that the website is a goldmine, underneath all the copyright violations, and that the owners of the copyrighted content are also potential investors that stand only to benefit.
