The new app release removes video downloading functionality

A new flavor of the YouTube application is now available for download for the owners of Windows Phone devices, namely version 3.0.0.2.

The new app release was meant to address the restricted video and offline video access that caused Google to send out a cease-and-desist letter to Microsoft last week, noting that it violated some of the YouTube terms of service.

For those out of the loop, we should note that said issues were found in the latest major release of the YouTube for Windows Phone app, which was released in early May.

Basically, the software provided users with a video downloading capability in that version, and the new release was meant to remove that completely.

According to a recent article on ZDNet, Microsoft and Google met to discuss the problem, and they decided to work together on this one, given the increasing number of people interested in Windows Phone devices.

“Microsoft updated the Windows Phone YouTube app to address the restricted video and offline video access concerns voiced by Google last week,” a Microsoft spokesperson told ZDNet.

“We have been in contact with Google and continue to believe that our two companies can work together to hone an app that benefits our mutual customers, partners and content providers.”

In early 2013, Windows Phone showed the largest year-over-year gain in market share when compared to other mobile operating systems out there, and has managed to climb to the third position in the smartphone OS segment.

“We look forward to working with Google to maintain a great YouTube experience for the growing number of people who rely on both of our respective products,” Microsoft also said.

The YouTube application is available for download for free for all Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5 devices, and can be found on this page on Softpedia. The application weighs only 2 MB.
