At this time, YouTube is the leader in the online video services category, being owned by Google, the provider of the well known search engine.
YouTube was acquired in October 2006 for $1.6 billion and is continuously updated with new features meant to attract even more clients. It seems like the users are usually attracted by home made videos as Daily News & Analysis reported. The user generated content is extremely efficient for both visitors and Google because it can help the search giant avoid copyright infringement lawsuits as there are no companies to sue YouTube.
"YouTube's traffic has not suffered since Viacom demanded that it remove 100,000 video clips on February 2, 2007. The market share of US visits to YouTube increased by 13.9% in the two week period between the weeks ending 2/3/07 and 2/17/07, and its average weekly traffic increase since the start of the year was 7%. As of 2/20/07, YouTube ranked as the 12th most visited Internet domain in the US. The sites that received more traffic than YouTube were MySpace domains, Google, Yahoo domains, Hotmail, MSN, eBay, Live Search, and Facebook," Hitwise reported. "If you look at the search terms driving traffic to YouTube, it turns out a lot of the content people are seeking is user generated," Hitwise general manager of global research Bill Tancer said according to Daily News & Analysis.
These results are at least impressive because recently, Viacom, the provider of well-known televisions programs such as Comedy Central and MTV, demanded Google to remove almost 100.000 clips from the YouTube page. Today, I presented a new feature implemented by YouTube that helps users change the soundtrack of certain videos uploaded on the page, so the signs are more obvious that Google wants to pay off the investments made for YouTube.
