Other World Computing (OWC) is a trusted hardware upgrade company that sells memory and storage solutions at affordable prices. Their RAM upgrade kits are particularly attractive, and they’ve just announced a new offer for owners of Mac Pro (Late 2013) models.

As a power user, you probably know every Mac inside out, but most people are unaware of just how expandable the Mac Pro is memory-wise. According to OWC, you can have as much RAM in the Mac Pro as solid-state storage in a MacBook Air: 128GB!

That’s right. The computer hardware firm is selling a 128GB RAM upgrade kit for Mac Pro (Late 2013) users for $2,129.99 / €1,548.30, which is certainly not cheap, but not too expensive either considering the sheer amount of memory you’ll be rocking.

So why would anyone need this much RAM, you may be wondering. OWC explains:

“Most new computers come with the bare minimum of memory (RAM) so you can perform basic tasks like checking e-mail or watching videos online. Trying to multitask or even run a typical application can slow your system to a crawl.”

By upgrading your system with more RAM, you’ll be able to do everything from web surfing and gaming to file transfer and reboots much faster. People using powerful video editing software need insane amounts of memory to apply those neat effects everyone loves, and the same goes for music production, photo editing, etc.

Customers can shave off a few dollars by trading in their existing memory modules. From the purchase date of any qualifying upgrade kit customers have 60 days to trade in their old memory for a cash rebate.

For customers interested in buying the expensive 128GB kit, OWC wants to make sure people know how to mix together their memory modules. The firm explains that “The Apple Mac Pro 2013 utilizes ECC non-Registered DDR3 DIMMs for modules up to 8GB per slot and ECC Registered Modules for 16GB (and larger) density per slot modules.”

“ECC non-Registered and ECC Registered modules can not be used/mixed together in the same system. When using OWC and/or Apple 16GB 1866MHZ ECC Registered DDR3 DIMMs in your Mac Pro, any previously installed OWC (or Apple) 8GB and/or 4GB ECC non-registered modules must be removed,” OWC adds.

The hefty 32GB modules sold by OWC are compatible with other 16GB modules, but customers are urged to mix them properly:

“These OWC 32GB modules will mix with other 16GB modules, but please note that these are 1066MHz and all installed memory will run at a maximum of 1066MHz. We recommend to mix and match RAM in pairs to maintain dual-channel mode,” OWC concludes.
