With days, or perhaps hours to go before iOS 4.2 is officially released to the public, applications that are compatible with the new software have started to emerge in the iTunes App Store.

As originally pointed out by OS X Daily, applications like ‘thetrainline’ by Trainline.com Ltd. are now showing iOS 4.2 compatibility in their updated changelogs over at the App Store.

A screenshot of the app’s iTunes page can be found to the top left side of the article (click to enlarge).

According to its developer, thetrainline version 2.0.2 now features iOS 4.2 compatibility, better user login handling, and includes a bunch of fixes for some bugs.

The app is basically a mobile interface for the UK's leading independent train ticket retailer, which sells tickets for all train companies to all national destinations.

“This is the official app from thetrainline and is perfect for anyone who wants to view UK train times or buy tickets on the move,” the description reads. “You can also download timetables and refer to them anytime, whether your iPhone (or iPod touch) is online or not.”

Various reports have indicated that iOS 4.2 should ship momentarily, although Apple is playing hard to get, with a GM seed offered to developers last week and still no sign of the final (public) version.

Still, the IPSW file should become available as a free download any day now.

One report quoted by Softpedia last week said iOS 4.2 was launching on November 9th, Tuesday (this week).

Citing what appeared to be reliable sources, the report said "It [iOS 4.2] is schedule for Tuesday, November 9 […] the date of issue by Apple’s new software iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch.”

The source failed to offer any external links or imagery of any kind as evidence of this so called info leak.

iOS 4.2 is an important update for all iDevice owners, and a particularly major one for iPad owners, who will now get a first taste of the new features originally included in this summer’s iOS 4 release, such as multitasking, application folders, Game Center, iAds and more.
