The Yoper development team and the lead-developer Tobias Gerschner have
announced the first maintenance release of Yoper GNU/Linux 3.0, codename
"Titanium".
This new version (3.0.1) will be shipped with the 2.6.21.1 Linux kernel including the ck-patchset with the SD scheduler, Xorg 7.3 and for your
visual pleasure, it will have KDE 3.5.7 installed. For your office activities, KOffice 1.6.3 will be available. The latest version of Firefox, 2.0.0.7, is the default web browser of Yoper Titanium. Also, a vast range of cutting-edge desktop packages are available for the users.
If you are one of those people who are keen on comparing their system's performance under different workloads, you should check the unstable repository, where you'll find a kernel with the CFS scheduler.
Since the release of Yoper 3.0, there are more than 500 new or updated packages and a lot of bugfixes and clean-ups. If you have Yoper 3.0 installed, you can update your packages by using the smart upgrade function. The differences between 3.0 and 3.0.1 are only minor and mostly visual.
This edition comes in two flavors:
1. The Slim CD, which is approximately 142 MB in size and it's made for those who want to build a custom system.
2. The Single CD that's almost 678 MB big and which is meant for the average user.
Another flavor, the DVD Version, of 3.7 GB, will be launched in almost two weeks so it will include changes through the feedback received from the 3.0.1 release. It will only be available as a bittorrent seed, because of the high traffic this ISO could generate.
Although 3.0.1 is a big step for Yoper, this Linux distribution will keep its main concepts. This means you will have a fast and easy to install operating system, with cherry picked parts from other distributions and instantly ready, optimized for i686 and compatible processors.
Yoper will continue to use SMART as the package-manager and an optimized package-building procedure with a new buildserver accessible to the public.
