An RX1 camera with curved sensor tech might arrive soon

Sony took the world of photography by surprise when it launched the perfume bottle-shaped lady-friendly camera for selfies. Most of us were appalled at the idea, but rumor had it the camera might house the hyped Sony curved sensor technology.

At the time of the official announcement, Sony did not say anything about the matter. It simply mentioned the camera took advantage of a 19.2MP sensor with F2.0 wide-angle and focal length of 21mm.

So back then we had to conclude the curved sensor did not make it into the ridiculously shaped selfie-camera. But we were wrong.

Surprise, the selfie camera has a curved sensor

In a recent interview with Quesabesde, Sony’s Mr. Akoi confirmed what was said before the KW1 went official to become a real product. Yes, the selfie-centric has a curved sensor. More than that, he made a few subtle references to future products taking advantage of the technology (as seen at Sony Alpha Rumors).

If you followed the events at Photokina 2014, you might be aware that Sony didn't go all out at the event. It focused on its E-Mount lenses, but that’s because of the market demand. However, that’s not to say the company doesn't have a lot more products up its sleeve.

Just yesterday we brought you news of rumors circulating online saying two big mega pixel Sony cameras will be launched on the market in the next six months.

Well, since Sony itself confirmed the curved sensor is alive and living inside the selfie camera, it prompted folks to proclaim the advent of some exciting products.

The Sony RX1 with curved sensor will be upon us soon

How would you feel about a curved sensor RX1 camera? We’re guessing such news would get a lot of people excited, but wait, we have more theories for you.

Sony might be working on a “rangefinder-style” digital medium format, which will arrive to compete with the likes of Phase One, Hasselblad and Pentax.

These cameras all take advantage of Sony’s own sensor, so it makes sense for the company to put its own work to good use in a medium camera of its own.

Since the company official mentioned there were a lot of “innovative” products coming our way under the Sony umbrella, we expect the upcoming 12 months to be quite exciting.

And while we wait on the curved sensor RX1 to make a debut on the market, maybe you will want to reconsider the perfume bottle-shaped gizmo, since you know now it does take advantage of a curved sensor. Finally, this aspect might justify the chubby $845 / €637 price tag it sells for.
