I wasn't expecting this one, but now that it's already here, I can't but enjoy and salute it: the vinyl ripper! Not what some of you might think of... like a vinyl deck connected to some PC or other recording device, but a completely standalone piece of equipment with specialized purpose and doing absolutely nothing more than what it's supposed to do: actually, transforming your vinyl collection in the respective CD collection!

SeaGrand, a Japan-based company skilled in "edge" technology has made this step and I must admit it is a very courageous one. Usually, vinyl collectors gather up piles of discs exactly because they like the way they look and the feeling that hearing a vinyl disc provides; I am not so sure whether they would embrace the new technology and instantly switch from plastic discs to the compact ones. One thing is sure: the vinyl discs won't disappear, as some people feared once the CD became popular; this is why I am more than confident in the vinyl owners that they won't kill their passion for the plastic records by using the GeneSound. Obviously, this gear proves its extreme utility when it comes to very old vinyl records which are most likely to get a lot more damage than the new ones you'd buy today from a music store. In this special case, having them backed-up looks like the best thing a music collector could go for.

SeaGrand's GeneSound will not only allow you to burn the content of your vinyls on a CD in MP3 format but also on an SD card or even to export this data onto other devices by means of the USB connectivity the device has by default. As it was the case of ADA interfaces when the connectivity question between analogic and digital systems was asked in a very serious manner, the same conspicuous looks might be seen regarding the GeneSound. No need to fear technology (at least not this one, ha-ha): the system is perfectly safe for your beloved and even very expensive vinyls and no harm will be done, that's a guarantee.

Discs recorded at 33 and 45 speeds will be handled by the GeneSound and the stereo speakers are included. So far, there is no price announced for the equipment and it is available in Japan only. Anyway, I guess it will pass little time until both the European and the American vinyl owners will be able to back up their collections using it.

Since everybody is quite sure that vinyl discs won't be put out, the SeaGrand's new piece of gear seems to have a rather nice future ahead of it; and it feels very nice, almost some kind of warm feeling seeing the utmost technology blending in a harmonious way with the vintage, already "old" sound tech. The perfect proof that new and vintage can make a good team together!
