Yahoo! introduces its new social address book app to Apple-portable users

Yahoo! has been quick to act and announce Yahoo! oneConnect for iPhone and iPod touch. The app is a new social address book that brings together a user’s circle of friends and all the details about their lives, while also providing ways to communicate seamlessly.

Although the company claims that Yahoo! oneConnect is “now available in the Apple iPhone App Store,” adding that future versions of the software will support additional devices sometime in the near future, the application is nowhere to be found on the venue. Surely, this has something to do with certain technical issues (or maybe Apple's board thinks the app simply won't appeal all that much).

But when it's made available, Yahoo! oneConnect users will be able to integrate all their contacts, send instant or SMS messages, post their status, and view the latest activity from their favorite social networks, all from just one application on their handsets.

Yahoo! oneConnect for iPhone boasts the following features, according to Yahoo!

Full-featured address book that integrates contacts from the user’s Yahoo! Address Book, iPhone and social networks.

Integrated mobile messaging with your friends via SMS and Yahoo! Messenger, including support for avatars, photos and emoticons.

Pulse: A convenient way to see what’s happening on your social networks. The initial version of Yahoo! oneConnect supports networks including Bebo, Dopplr, Facebook, Flickr, Friendster, Last.fm, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube.

Favorites: A simple way to keep your most important people close at hand to check on status, call or send a quick message or email.

“The iPhone has ignited and captured the imagination of what a mobile phone can do,” said Marco Boerries, executive vice president, Yahoo! Connected Life. “The rich feature set of the iPhone enables the best way to experience oneConnect. The powerful combination of Yahoo! Blueprint, the mobile platform, and the iPhone SDK, was leveraged to create this unique experience of oneConnect for millions of iPhone users.”

Yahoo! oneConnect is available free of charge for users of an iPhone or iPod touch in the United States, according to Yahoo! The app should require firmware 2.0 or later to run. iPod touch users can already upgrade to the new 2.1 firmware announced two days ago, while iPhone owners will have to wait until Friday to get it.
