The rumors that Microsoft negotiated with Yahoo to buy a stake in Yahoo's search business seem to have been true, Terry Semel, the Sunnyvale company's CEO, revealing that he refused the software giant's offer.
The first news regarding the fusion between the two companies surfaced simultaneously with Microsoft's separation from the Overture advertising service.
"One faction within Microsoft Corp. is promoting a bold strategy in the company's battle with Google Inc: Join forces with Yahoo Inc.", The Wall Street Journal wrote.
Terry Semel denied however that there have been discussions between the two companies regarding Yahoo's takeover by Microsoft.
"Microsoft taking over Yahoo - that conversation has never come up", Semel told the Finnancial Times.
"(We discussed) search, and Microsoft co-owning some of our search. I will not sell a piece of search, it is like selling your right arm while keeping your left; it does not make any sense", Semel added.
According to recent statistics, MSN stands on the last place on the online search market, with half of Yahoo's market share. Terry Semel doesn't think this situation will change too much, despite Microsoft's efforts, and he says that the online search business has been formed.
