Yahoo isn't giving up on search just yet and, in fact, it's looking to compete with its main rivals in the real-time search space. Both Google and Bing have
announced deals with Twitter to
include data from the microblogging service inside the search results. Yahoo, though, is taking another route by partnering with existing real-time search engine OneRiot and possibly other providers in the future.
“Yahoo! Search is currently testing a new search shortcut that will include real-time results at the top of the search results page. The shortcut will only appear on certain queries that will be determined by Yahoo. This is a test designed to discover if showing such content is useful to people using Yahoo! Search. Yahoo! is focused on creating the most innovative, easy-to-use and valuable search experience for people, and after this test we will carefully evaluate whether we should integrate such results for everyone using Yahoo! Search,” Yahoo announced its plans to get into the real-time search game.
This confirms
earlier rumors that Yahoo was looking to have some sort of real-time component in its search engine as well. The announcement is only in the testing phase and the features aren't ready to be implemented on a wider scale just yet. For now, OneRiot will be providing Yahoo with results for certain queries that the search engine deems would benefit from real-time information. Yahoo wants to see if its users will find it helpful, but also what queries are mostly suited for this type of results.
Yahoo seems determined to not give up on the search front, which it has been
claiming for a while now. The claims, though, weren't backed by too much actions and the fact that Yahoo had sold its search business to Bing, which will provide it with the results, was an indication that maybe the company had given up on a race it seemed unlikely to win. Yahoo, though, thinks it can still provide enough innovation with the interface to still be an appealing option for users.
