It just sucks big time to have high hopes for a product that you just love using and have them shattered to pieces time and time again. That’s the way it went for me with the IM from Yahoo!, which I used to base most of my online social life on, until I saw that the work they’re putting in isn’t, to say it nicely, top notch.
In the past months, they’ve said on the official blog
that they’ve added some new features, but it wasn’t the case. They announced a set of clothing for the avatars twice, the call history was also twice announced and the overall impression is, well…, lacking. I had hoped for a while to find one morning a feed in my Reader that announced, with the due festive sounds, that a new feature was added, that of call recording. Ta-da! "Record the memorable conversations with your loved ones on your PC, courtesy of Yahoo!", I had hoped to read.
Instead, I found the feed this morning, it had the right title, "Recording Yahoo! Messenger calls", but the message was all wrong! They encouraged users to buy some software in order to get the job done, instead of having the dev team make the extra effort of coming up with their own solution.
Not only that, but it looked like the Product Manager for YM was actually advertising a program. What does this look like to you? "Download and installation for HotRecorder was quick and easy. I did notice it was set with Skype as the default program for recording calls from, and I couldn’t figure out right away how to change that to Yahoo! Messenger. But a quick search of their online help set me straight - right click on the HotRecorder icon in the system tray, select 'Activate HotRecorder for…' and then choose Yahoo! Messenger. If you don’t see Yahoo! Messenger in the list initially, make sure it’s running on your computer."
Eh, it’s just disappointing. Really. The feature many have hoped for will NOT be coming and will NOT be at least in their "to do" list by the looks of it. Oh, happy day!
