Yahoo Mail is, as the Sunnyvale company sustains, the best web-based email, although it doesn't provide important functions such as POP3/IMAP support. And
let's be honest, such a function would convince a lot of users to configure their email accounts to work with desktop clients, without visiting the website anymore. Maybe this is the main problem, Yahoo wants a service that brings visitors on the page…
Millions of consumers around the world have sent feedback messages and requests to Yahoo, asking for POP3 support in Yahoo Mail. However, the Sunnyvale company is still offering POP support as a feature of Yahoo Mail Plus, a special version of the email service which requires you to pay $19.99 per year. Mountain View rival Google, on the other hand, already has POP3 and IMAP support in its Gmail which is currently gaining more and more popularity.
Although they're not offering such a function, the folks at Yahoo are still trying to find an alternative that would allow consumers to access the email service quickly and easily. That's why Ryan K, Community Manager, has recently published a blog post explaining that Yahoo Mail can be easily accessed straight from your computer desktop.
In case you'd like to do such a shortcut, the process is quite simple. Go over to Yahoo Mail and, depending on the browser you use, drag that tiny Yahoo logo placed in the address bar on your desktop. This will create a new web shortcut on your desktop entitled "Yahoo! Mail The best web-based email!," no matter if you're using Firefox or Internet Explorer.
I really don't know how useful this function could prove to be since some of the software solutions developed by Yahoo include options for placing shortcuts on the desktop… However, give it a try and find out for yourself!

i am already phasing out my yahoo email accounts... |

| Comment #3 by: yahoo no mo on 30 May 2008, 19:09 GMT | reply to this comment | Wow I found this page by googling for Yahoo Imap access to see if they had any plans in the work before I cancelled my Yahoo Mail Plus subscription. It already bothered me that they gave free POP access internationally but not in the US.
I had to check the dateline of the article to confirm that it was 2008. I can't believe Yahoo's official suggestion for free desktop access to Yahoo Mail is creating a shortcut! Buh-bye! |
| Comment #4 by: Jack on 20 Jun 2008, 16:49 GMT | reply to this comment | When you are an AT&T/SBC subscriber, Yahoo is your default service. However, I just forward my Yahoo stuff to my Gmail account. This way, I get my IMAP email to my Centro just as I like it. Yahoo needs to get with the times. Google is just going to keep swallowing them up. I think AT&T is probably the only thing propping them up now. |
