14 DAY TRIAL // Yahoo has been taking a different approach from Google lately, when it comes to its Mail service. While Google has an army of engineers and does all of its development in house, with Gmail now boasting a big number of Labs features bringing all sorts of functionality, Yahoo has opened up to outside app developers and has been launching a stream of interesting applications for Yahoo Mail. Now, it's introducing another round of features enabling 100MB attachments and advanced invitation creation.
“With the launch of the new and improved Yahoo! Mail a couple of weeks ago, we announced the upcoming addition of a set of apps to help you be more productive and do more within Mail. Well, today is the big day! We’ve added new apps and made improvements to [the] ones you already know and love. And they can all be found right in the handy Applications box on the lower left-hand corner of your Yahoo! Mail inbox,” Stephanie Shum, senior product manager for Yahoo Mail, wrote.
Drop.io - The new feature that most people should find useful is the ability to send 100 MB attachments powered by drop.io. Using the new app is simple enough, by clicking on the “Attach Large Files” button, users are greeted with the drop.io welcome page, which allows them to select the files they want to send. Users can add any number of files, as long as they stay below the 100MB mark, and then proceed to composing their mail. The recipient of the email will be able to download separate files or the entire group, as well as preview several file types.
Pingg - Another app just introduced is pingg Invitations, which allows users to design, send and keep track of invitations for various events or occasions. The app comes with an image gallery to help users create their customized invitations, but also a unified dashboard to monitor the responses, comments and other information from the ones invited. There is also the possibility to customize the invitations for individual users. Finally, they can add the events to Yahoo Calendar and specify the location with Yahoo Maps.
Envite - Finally, Yahoo also launched another invitation app, Envite, similar to pingg, which does pretty much the same thing. Envite enables users to choose from the number of available designs and then manage the invitations and the guests. Events created with Envite can also be synced with Yahoo Calendar.
