But coming hard from behind

Yahoo is on top of the world. At least according to statistics made available by Internet metrics company comScore. The Sunnyvale Internet giant has quite a considerable lead over its direct competitors for the world wide web. The data published by comScore indicates that Google and Microsoft trailing Yahoo is becoming somewhat of a tradition. Yahoo is firmly placed at the top of the ranking with the first 50 online properties in the U.S. The Sunnyvale-based company has managed to gather the largest amount of eyeballs out of a total Internet audience of over 181 million.

"The top 10 properties remained unchanged in August, as Yahoo! Sites topped the ranking with more than 135 million visitors. CBS Corporation experienced a 16-percent gain, lifting it 6 spots to number 24. Comcast Corporation also experienced a sizable jump, moving up seven positions to number 26 in the ranking with more than 25 million visitors. United Online enjoyed a four-position gain, drawing more than 26 million unique visitors in August," comScore revealed.

In contrast to Yahoo, Microsoft has yet to make it into the top 3. The Redmond company's online properties, accounting for a little over 118 million unique visitors, occupy only the fourth position. Microsoft has in fact been one step short of the third position for the past five months. The company's sites attracted a unique audience of 115 million in April, 113 million in May, 116 million in June, 118 in July and 118 in August. Just enough to keep Microsoft at the traditional fourth place in the top online properties. And this is a comfortable position for the Redmond company, as the closest follower, Fox Interactive Media, is at a considerable distance, somewhere under 80 million unique visitors.

Time Warner Network has grabbed the third position for the third month in a row with an audience of 124. Time Warner Network was dislodged from the second place back in May by Google. And since May, the Mountain View Internet giant has been runner-up to Yahoo. In August, there have been 128 million eyeballs glued to Google, and in this respect, Yahoo has something to worry about since its direct rival is growing at an increased pace.
